Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine post Civil War, Indian Wars era leather cartridge box for use by the United States Navy, but this example does not have USN embossed on the outer flap as most do. The box may have been refinished and is not marked anywhere.
The outer surfaces of the box exhibit wear from age and use. The outer flap has heavy crazing throughout. The box still has the closure tab partially attached and brass finial is present at the bottom, though it feels a bit loose. The back of the box has the belt loop but it has unfortunately broken through completely at the top. The inner flap is in nice shape and has both ears present. On the innermost compartment it has an original wooden insert with two sets of eight holes for charges. The box may have been restored by a collector at one point.
A fair representative example of a rare cartridge box, ready for display.
