Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very interesting set, the first of its kind we have offered. A saddlebag set used by a Doctor during the U.S. Indian Wars of the 1880s and 1890s. This was certainly a private purchase set and indeed has the maker’s stamp embossed on each bag to George . The leather is very old and certainly of the period given the construction. During this era, accouterments like this did not have one single design and differed heavily between the maker.
Each bag is lined with a tin frame. The bags each measure approximately 7½ x 3 x 7¾”. The bags are decorated with a tooled line design on the sides and face. Each flap has two parallel lines that follow its edge. At the center of each flap is a tooled diamond design. The leather holding the two saddle bags together is heavily crazed but is still solid and will display very well. There is a patent stamp on each bag reading
STEPHENS PATENT
JUNE 30 1885
GEO. K. HOPKINS
& CO.
SOLE AGENTS
ST. LOUIS, MO.
There are 3 glass bottles all of similar design and with no cork stoppers. They are roughly 4” long each. The metal fittings of the bags all have a bit of verdigris and oxidation. There is no longer a way to secure the bags shut as those straps have faded away with time. The set is in fair shape but the leather of the bags have shrunk a great deal over time and much of it is off of its intended spot, and the tin can be seen behind it. Overall a fair set of bags, the first of their kind we have offered.
This is a very scarce set of Indian War era saddle bags, ready for further research and display. Would look amazing with some more period bottles.
