Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original example of a U.S. Model 1883 / 1889 style Campaign Hat, representing the distinctive type of military headgear worn during the later Indian Wars period and into the era of the Spanish-American War. Surviving examples are difficult to locate in any condition, and this example is still very solid.
The hat is made from dark felt and retains the characteristic punched crown ventilation associated with this pattern. Both sides display the distinctive “snowflake” style vent pattern, one of the most recognizable features of these late-19th-century campaign hats.
The brim retains three rows of stitching around its edge, consistent with the construction of the type. There is scattered moth damage along the brim edge and in several areas of the crown, together with general age wear from use and storage.
The hat ribbon bow is well-retained with some fraying and loss in the bow material. These felt hats became symbolic of the Army on the western frontier and today is one of the most highly prized pieces of military headgear. The campaign hat retains the majority of the original leather sweatband, though it is very fragile with a sizable tear in one side, though it is a tear in the center and is not torn through to either side. The exterior shows signs of honest use, with some mothing to the exterior crown of the hat. There is a small hole in the front of the crown which is seen often on this model as it is where a badge was once attached.
The campaign hat is roughly a size 6⅞, but there is no marking we can find.
The combination of the snowflake-pattern crown vents, three-row brim stitching, surviving ribbon and bow, original leather sweatband, apparent insignia mounting hole, and late-19th-century construction makes this a strong representative example of U.S. campaign headgear from the Indian Wars and Spanish-American War era. The condition issues are consistent with age and long-term storage, while the surviving original components preserve the character of a scarce and highly identifiable Army hat pattern.
