Original Items: Only Ones Available. Original M-1878 “Blanket Bag” and M-1878 Canteen, Both U.S. Issued items as used from the 1870s up until the adoption of the M-1910 Series of accouterments was adopted. As used by all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces at that time, with an extended service life extending well over thirty years. Often seen used in conjunction with a blanket roll and haversack to carry equipment. This was the first model pack adopted following the Model 1858 “Double Bag” Knapsack used during the Civil War.
The example we are offering is in very good condition, especially considering it is well over one hundred years old. The canvas exhibits the expected dirt, stains, and wear in places as expected with a service used military article of this age. Both russett leather shoulder straps are still intact, although dry as expected. The original elkhide closure loops on the pack flap and inner pocket flap are also intact! There are no maker stamps or dates on this pack, which is not uncommon as these are usually a depot-made piece. There is a nice crisply stamped “U.S.” on the pack flap, and “Idaho” stamped on the inner corner of the main flap.
The Model 1878 Canteen is in well used condition, but is still in very solid condition. Patina, signs of corrosion, and age are evident. The original cork stopper is missing, with only part of the retention chain remaining.
An excellent opportunity to obtain two difficult to find pieces of U.S. Military equipment that was used in the US military for well over thirty years! These pieces become increasingly hard to find with each passing year!
