Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great original M-1878 “Blanket Bag” as used from the 1870s up until the adoption of the M-1912 was adopted. As used by all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces at that time, with an extended service life extending well over thirty years. Often seen used in conjunction with a blanket roll and haversack to carry equipment. This was the first model pack adopted following the Model 1858 “Double Bag” Knapsack used during the Civil War.
The example we are offering is in very good condition considering its age. The canvas exhibits the expected dirt, stains, and wear in places as expected with a service used military article of this age. Both russet leather shoulder straps are still intact, although dry as expected. The original elkhide closure loops on the inner pocket flap are also intact, but the front flap examples are gone. The interior is stamped ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL. There is a nice crisply stamped “U.S.” on the pack flap under a large crossed cannons between 113 and COAST denoting the 113th Company, Coastal Artillery Corps, with a 70 under the US denoting the bag or soldier number.
A great example, ready for further research and display!
