Original U.S. Indian Wars Rare M1873/76 Winchester Bayonet and Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Winchester Model 1876, or Centennial Model, was a heavier-framed rifle than the Models 1866 and 1873, chambered for full-powered centerfire rifle cartridges suitable for big-game hunting, rather than the handgun-sized rimfire and centerfire rounds of its predecessors. While similar in design to the 1873, the 1876 was actually based on a prototype 1868 lever-action rifle that was never commercially produced by Winchester.

1873/76 Winchester rifles with bayonets were carried by the “Hawaii Citizens Guard” during the brief Royalist “Counter-revolution” revolution of 1895, in which supporters of the deposed Queen Liliuokalani attempted to overthrow the “Republic of Hawaii” and restore her to her throne, January 6-9, 1895.

This bayonet is quite impressive, about 25 inches long with a 20 ⅛ inch "Yataghan" style saber blade, with a wide fuller on each side. The ricasso of the blade is marked with the manufacturer's logo of a Crown over W for Winchester. The cast brass hilt has a lovely scalloped grip with signs of being cleaned. The bayonet release still functions properly but is a little stiff. The blade shows signs of minor use with just a little staining present. The scabbard is solid with all stitching still tight. The brass throat and draw are still attached tightly. There is light crazing and cracking in the finish with only one weak spot just above the drag.

This is a wonderful example of a seldom seen Winchester bayonet. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
