Item Description
Original Item Only One Available. This is a United States Model 1850 or M1850 Militia Coatee. We believe it dates from the later period of the Indian Wars as the inside tails are a solid black and not a greenish black like the earlier issue examples. This Coatee is for a New York Militia Regiment with multiple markings inside on the lining.
The front of the swallowed tail jacket has 9 rows of herringbone pattern ribbon going across, with only the brass buttons down the center being functional and two more rows on either side being decorative. There are 18 more shiny brass buttons on the swallow tails and sleeves, and two more buttons on the stand up collar. All of the buttons read "EXCELSIOR". All buttons are back marked.
The jacket is lined with a machine quilted lining of a light color. The swallow tails are lined in black, and contains a secret pocket in one of the tails. There is a fair amount of hand stitching the finish work of the lining.
Overall condition is very good for the age with scatter moth nips.
