Original U.S. Indian Wars Named Model 1858 Federal McDowell Pattern Kepi by Bent & Bush, Boston

Item Description

Original Item: Only one available. This is a fine example of an Indian Wars Issue Model 1858 McDowell pattern kepi in very good condition. As issued to both enlisted men and officer’s during this period. This cap bears the maker stamp in the crown stiffener for the firm of Bent and Bush of Boston, Massachusetts.

This McDowell Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 3" high at the front, 5" at the rear seam and the top is 5 1/2" in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is lined with black polished cotton which is still mostly attached to the top seam. The Moroccan leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide with what appears to be a period repair. The once flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of tarred leather. The visor is a little deformed, rounded and partially detached.

There are two brass Federal Eagle buttons on either side of the cap to which the chinstrap is secured. The interior pasteboard is embossed with a maker's name and logo. The crown markings are faint but can still be read as being made by BENT & BUSH / BOSTON. Above the embossed logo is a paper name label with the name J. FRANK POPE written on it. Unfortunately we were unable to locate any service information.

Indian Wars and Civil War kepis are quite popular. This wonderful condition sample will make an excellent addition to any military headgear collection!
