Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rough overall example of an early Indian War Model 1872 U.S. Army Regulation Kepi worn by a member or officer of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. This U.S. Army Model 1872 Kepi features fabric of dark blue wool broadcloth, with a painted leather visor, bullion rope chinstrap, with brown polished cotton lining in the crown. The leather visor is missing much of its stitching and is a bit loose. The crown stands 2 3/4" high at the front, 4 3/4" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the back and stiffened with leather. This example dates to roughly 1885-1890 and is in rough condition with the sweatband already gone and an original leather chinstrap attached by the two Sons of Union Veterans buttons.
The original bullion rope chinstrap is present, being secured on each side of the cap by a Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War button. There is a maker mark on the interior crown for The Simmons Co. at Dan Hall of Boston, Massachusetts.
A nice example of an M1872 kepi. Ready for display.
