Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice private-purchase U.S. Army M1883 sack coat, or fatigue blouse, dating from the Indian Wars era but apparently worn into the early 20th century. The coat is fitted with a striking pair of M1902 pattern Infantry chevrons for the rank of Principal Musician, creating an interesting transitional uniform combining an earlier style blouse with later insignia.
The M1883 sack coat was a practical fatigue and service garment worn by U.S. Army personnel during the late 19th century. Private-purchase examples can vary somewhat in cut, lining, and finish, and this coat has the appearance of a better quality privately obtained garment rather than a standard issue example.
Both sleeves retain M1902 pattern Infantry chevrons for a Principal Musician. The later insignia indicates that this Indian Wars era coat continued in use after the turn of the century, a practice that was not unusual as older service garments remained wearable and could be updated with newer rank insignia.
The interior retains a very good lining, although we can find no visible maker’s markings, size labels, or other identification tags. All of the buttons remain present and are in fair condition.
A pocket is present at the left breast. Due to age and long use, the interior pocket material has torn through and is no longer fully intact.
Overall, the coat remains in very good condition for its age and is one of the better M1883 examples we have encountered. The combination of private-purchase construction, surviving M1902 Principal Musician chevrons, complete button arrangement, and strong overall appearance makes this a particularly interesting example of a U.S. Army uniform that bridged the Indian Wars and early 20th century periods.
