Original U.S. Indian Wars M1872 National Guard of Pennsylvania Officer’s Chapeau Bicorne Hat by J.H. Wilson of Philadelphia in Original Case

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great "Chapeau De Bras" folding bicorn beaver fur chapeau with original ostrich feathers. It features a gilt cockade with gilt spread wing eagle insignia and National Guard of Pennsylvania button. Interior with cream colored silk lining and leather sweatband. Front and back complete with heavy gilt wire fringe (gilt has faded). Fantastic gold maker name which reads: J.H. WILSON MILITARY GOODS, PHILADELPHIA. The hat comes in its original carrying case and is folded inside. The feathers of this example are very delicate and will come off if not careful.

The case is in very rough shape with roughly 40% of the original black paint remaining. It measures 19⅜ x 6 x 3½” and is missing the handle, but the latch is still retained. The maker’s paint marking can still be seen surrounded by a wreath above the latch:

J.H. WILSON
MAKER
PHILADA.
PENN.

The chapeau is in fair condition and will likely only stay unfolded if on a head, so it is recommended to do this upon receiving it to help it begin to regain its original shape. The gilt cockade is in good shape with the NGP button still very shiny. The largest feather of the chapeau has broken off but it could likely be stuck somewhere else on the hat.

A great example of an NGP chapeau, ready for further research and display.
