Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting bayonet that began life as an M-1855 Bayonet during the Civil War. During the Indian Wars period, particularly during 1878-1890, this bayonet was converted & compressed to a .45-70 Socket, for use on a Springfield Trapdoor rifle.
This example came to us from the Larry Thomas American Edged Weapon Museum in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, further cementing its authenticity and prestige. There is actually a tag put on by the museum still attached which reads:
U.S. M-1855
TYPE I - SOCKET
COMPRESSED TO
45-70 - C - 1878 -
1890. NOT FINISHED
BRIDGE CRACKED
NOT BLUED 2
The tag gives great information on the provenance and history of the item, and we have had a great many items from this collection before, each with the same level of prestige.
A very lovely bayonet, ready for further research and display!
