  • Original Item: One Of A Kind: This original M1860 Staff and Field officer’s sword is one of many produced by various manufacturers from the Civil War to the turn of the century. This example was German-made, manufactured by F.R. Neeff Söhne of Solingen.

This officer's sword was adopted on August 28, 1860 acting upon the officer who would rarely if ever be called upon to wield a sword in battle. It was not mandatory until after the close of the Civil War, however in 1872, this sword became mandatory for all officers except medical staff, paymasters, mounted officers of infantry, cavalry & light artillery. Blade is embellished on both sides with an extremely faint etched foliate and an American Eagle. Blade is semi-bright with scattered age discoloration spots.

The Sword hilt is brass, with the handle having a leather-wrapped wood handle with the wire wrap still present but heavily worn. The blade is not etched at all on this example. The ricasso is marked with the belt-wrapped logo of

    F.R. NEEFF SӦHNE
    SOLINGEN

F.R. Neeff Söhne Solingen (Friedrich Neeff & Son) was a German manufacturer of cutlery, knives, and other steel goods located in the "City of Blades," Solingen, Germany. The company was known for producing a variety of items, including hunting short swords, pocket knives, and possibly other edged weapons and tools.

The blade has some very light scattered oxidation in spots. The hilt has some looseness to the blade, but otherwise it’s in fair condition. There is some light bending in the blade near the tip, but nothing too serious.

The brass scabbard has a heavily corroded, dark gray/brown patina and is adorned with two brass mounts and a brass drag; the brass throat is still present. Both mounts exhibit a floral display. The top mount sports two rings while the lower mount has only one. The brass drag features a bold star on one side and a set of draped flags on the other. Both sword mounts and the drag are tight.

This is a very handsome sword which is a must have for the collector of 19th Century U.S. Militaria.

    Dimensions:
    Blade Length: 27 7/8”
