Original U.S. Indian Wars Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver made in 1867 with 4" Barrel & Period Holster - Serial 297644

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 297644 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. The cylinder and cylinder arbor pin bear shortened number 7644, while the barrel wedge and loading rammer are unmarked. We do not know if they were replaced, or whether Colt had stopped marking them by this point. The color and patina match the rest of the revolver, so we believe them to be original.

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1867, during the years immediately following the U.S. Civil War, when attention then turned to the frontier. Units of the U.S. Army were deployed out west to combat the Native Americans that were in conflict with the westward expansion of frontier settlers. It comes complete with a standard black finished leather flap holster, which unfortunately is in delicate condition. It looks to be made of doeskin leather, sewn together at the edges.

As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It also features a short 4" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel. There is also a VERY faint COLT'S PATENT over the serial number marking on the cylinder, as well as a few small portions of the original "Stagecoach Holdup" cylinder scene.

The Colt New York single line address is still mostly legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -

It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, with 31 CAL on the trigger guard. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have a good amount of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory, often worn completely away.

The revolver functions flawlessly, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a mostly bright finish showing only light wear and oxidation in the grooves. All 6 cap nipple cones are intact and clear, though they do show some oxidation and powder burn to the exterior.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the early Indian Wars Era, complete with an original period leather holster! A wonderful acquisition for any collection, in very good condition and ready to display!
