Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic, Indian Wars (1880-1895) company-grade officer’s uniform frock coat complete with both original, quality shoulder straps of a Cavalry Colonel. Well-constructed of rich, dark indigo-blue wool broadcloth, the uniform frock coat exhibits a six-piece main body, consisting of two front panels, two side panels and two back panels plus the skirts. Coat is in remarkably nice condition with just a handful of tiny moth nips and some seam splitting. Uniform has a two-piece standing interior collar of the same fine broadcloth material and is piped with black satin around the base. Interior collar exhibits minor repairs.
This frock coat exhibits two wonderful brass framed bordered shoulder straps with dark brass Colonel eagle. The yellow velvet fields of both straps are in excellent condition with no mothing at all on the fields. Both straps are in very fine condition. Sleeves are typical two piece construction.
Coat cuffs display three small size, Eagle “Shield” brass buttons on each cuff. This single-breasted uniform coat features nine coat-size, Eagle “Shield” brass buttons arranged in one row down the front of the coat. All of the buttons are original and are in very fine condition. All coat buttons are backmarked with HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA. Cuff buttons are brass back. All the uniform buttons are attractive, undented and exhibit much gold gilt.
The interior shoulder body panel of the coat is lightly padded and lined with fine, green cotton cloth. Remainder of the coat body, as well as the skirts, the remainder of the lining appears to have been cut away. Otherwise, very fine with few scattered moth nips. Both sleeves are lined with a light cream-colored linen material. Stitching is weak in areas. Sweat stains evident. No size or maker’s markings. Rear of coat is cut with a center split, a.k.a. vent, and has folded tails with a pocket worked into each of the tails.
Original, Indian Wars Cavalry uniform frock coats such as this specimen are much sought after in the today’s collecting market. Reasonably priced, this handsome late Indian Wars officer’s frock coat is certain to prove an attractive cloth acquisition to any American military display or collection.
