Original U.S. Indian Wars Army Signal Corps Officer’s Beaver Pelt Chapeau Cap

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic example of the scarce Indian War period U.S. Army Officer’s "Chapeau De Bras", or folding bicorn. It is made of beaver fur with original ostrich feathers. These caps were intended as a Dress Hat, and not many survived the ages due to their fragile nature. The cap we are offering is perhaps one of the finest examples of a U.S. Army Chappeau from the Indian War era that we have ever seen! Not only is the cap in very solid condition, but all the adornments are still intact as well!

The hat features a gilt cockade with gilt wire bullion embroidered spread wing federal eagle. Of note is that the Federal Shield on the body of the bullion eagle is hand embroidered in full color (normally the shield is solid gold bullion). Below the eagle is an early US Army Signal Corps Button. These Caps were universal, with the only distinction being the branch of service button affixed to the cockade on the right side of the cap.

The interior is lined with red silk lining and leather sweatband. The sweatband is loose in some places, but it is not falling out. The original paper size label is still present on the sweatband, bearing the size “7”. Oddly enough, the cap does not have a maker label present.

This is a fantastic military hat that was produced just following the Civil War. Overall condition is very good, and complete as well. This makes for a fantastic display!
