Original Item: Only One Available. HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. of Norwich, Connecticut is probably best known for manufacturing all manner of entry level of firearms in the late 19th Century. However, they were in fact a subsidiary company of Merwin, Hulbert, & Co. or Merwin & Hulbert, an American firearms designer and marketer based in New York City.
This is a fine example of one of their "falling block" design single barrel shotguns, definitely designed for hunting, as it really is quite long for any type of defensive use. It measures 45 1/2 inches in overall length, with a 30 inch 12 gauge barrel. The barrel has a brass bead front sight, and the rear sight is a groove on the top of the receiver. The top of the barrel has the standard Hopkins & Allen address:
MADE BY THE HOPKINS & ALLEN MANFG. CO. NORWICH CONN. U.SA.
Overall condition is very nice, and this would make a splendid wallhanger. The stocks are lovely, and originally had very nice checkering. They are a bit worn now, and the rear stock has a dowel repair in the wrist. The metalwork has a lovely worn patina. The action cycles correctly, though at some point the firing pin and spring were removed, probably to prevent children from potentially firing it.
