Original U.S. Heavy Percussion Target "Bench" Rifle with Octagonal Barrel - circa 1850

Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased at a recent military auction! Here is a very nice U.S. Mid 19th century Percussion Target Rifle, often called a "bench" rifle, as these were often supported or shot from a bench. It is in about .45" caliber, and has a very heavy octagonal barrel with seven groove rifling. At 15lbs, this rifle would see very little recoil during target shooting.
We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1850, and features engraved "German Silver" mountings of butt plate, trigger guard, and butt stock patch box. The nose cap on the half stock looks to be zinc, and the barrel escutcheons look to be replacements, made from rectangular brass. The stock is in good shape, though it does show some repairs around the lock area. Both sides show some repaired cracking, as expected due to the heavy weight of the barrel.
The back action lock is unmarked, and does not appear to have any provision for a "half-cock" position, just having full cock. We do not know if this is due to wear or by design. The interior of the barrel is clear, and still shows the 7 groove rifling, though it is definitely worn. This is a target rifle that definitely saw use!
