Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an very lovely Campaign or Slouch Hat for a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), made of black felt. It has an original Civil War gold General Officer’s bullion hat cord around it. There is a gorgeous bullion wreath attached to the front, with a metal A device within.
The exterior shows heavy wear and age, and there are a few holes in the top peaks of the hat, including at the front and back. The back of the wreath and A device show that they have been on the hat for the majority of its life. The interior of the hat still has the original leather sweatband which is complete but is void of stitching, so it is very loose in the hat. The leather is embossed with the makers name:
RETSEL
Raw Edge
The first reference we could find to Retsel hats is in Vermont in 1882, so this hat likely dates to the 1880s. The hat appears to be roughly size 7¼, though it may have shrunk over the years. Offered in very good condition this is a unique and attractive Civil War Veteran's Campaign Hat from the late 19th century. Ready to display!
