Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. When one sees the word “Grapnel” your mind will usually drift towards the grappling hook used for climbing, this set differs from the more robust climbing hooks. This type of grapnel is still avidly used in the Armed Forces, mainly with the infantry. I (Paddy) have used this exact one and made field expedient ones while in the Marine Corps Infantry, utilizing these to clear obstacles, look for booby-traps or wires and so on. As the War on Terror raged, so did the use of improvised explosive devices, making these rifle-launched grapnel sets an important tool in the arsenal.
Grappling hooks are used by combat engineers to breach tactical obstacles. When used as such, the grappling hook is launched in front of an obstacle and dragged backwards to detonate tripwire-fused land mines, and can be hooked on wire obstacles and pulled to set off booby traps on the wire. The rifle-launched grapnel (LGH), a single-use grappling hook placed on the end of an M4/M16 rifle, is used for this purpose. Though the LHG is considered a single use item, these are often retained for training purposes and have to be marked “TRAINING”. This example is fortunately not marked for training, meaning that it was never employed. A grapnel can clear up to 99% of the trip-wires in a single pass. During WW2 British and German ships towed grappling hooks in the hope of snagging or damaging enemy submarines, a tactic also employed by the Japanese. Grappling hooks were used by soldiers at the D-Day landings to aid in climbing the cliffs at the Normandy beaches. Some were rocket-propelled and launched from mortars.
This set is in wonderful condition and still retains a clean plastic wrapped roll of white twine, the LGH USER’S MANUAL which is titled for US Army Use. There are no .556 blank ammunition or any other type of combustible ammunition present.
A beautiful, still practical item that comes more than ready for display or even use!
