Original U.S. Gallager Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine in .52 Rimfire - Serial 22737

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. Made in Philadelphia by RICHARDSON & OVERLAND starting in a U.S. Government order dated August 31st 1861 a total of some 17,000 units were produced by this maker. The serial number of our example is 22737.

Ironically the Original patent # 29,157 granted on July 17th. 1860 was to MAHLON J. GALLAGER, who was born in South Carolina and throughout the Civil War lived in Savanna , Georgia. It was first produced in Percussion, but was changed to a .52 Rim Fire Cartridge once these became available in quantity. The rifle itself was strongly made, but unpopular with troops. The design has no provision for a cartridge extractor, so every casing had to be manually removed. Frequently, the cases stuck due to expansion of the front part and had to be laboriously removed.

The lock plate of this carbine bears the manufacturer and patent details:

GALLAGER'S PATENT

There are faint Inspector's Cartouches on the stocks left side and the butt stock is fitted with a sprung loaded patch box in iron. No fore stock was ever designed for this carbine and it was never intended to be fitted with a bayonet.

In fine overall blued finish this is in very nice condition with a nice stock. Bore is mostly bright with clear lands and grooves. Ready to display.
