Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Founded by SULLIVAN FOREHAND and HENRY C. WADSWORTH in 1871, revolvers made by this company are exceedingly rare on the market. Both men shared the same Father-in-law, the famous Gun Maker ETHAN ALLEN who died in 1871. After this many of the gunsmiths he mentored went out into business on their own.
In 1873 they produced their 1873 ARMY MODEL Revolver in .44 Russian, however they were unfortunately too late to compete with COLT and REMINGTON, who had already secured almost all of the Government and State Contracts. As such they primarily produced firearms for the consumer market, where pocket pistols were very popular.
Here we offer a lovely example of their rare "baby Derringer" single shot pocket pistol, a very diminutive design. It is fully nickel plated with lovely finished walnut grips, and is in very nice condition. Only a few hundred of these pistols are believed to have been made between 1871-1890, making every example rare. The design is relatively simple, with a swing out barrel released by a button on the bottom, an external hammer, and the popular "spur trigger" of the time.
The top of the barrel still bears the correct two line address:
FOREHAND & WADSWORTH
WORCESTER, MASS.
Serial number 4113 is shown on the grip frame under the scales and on the underside of the barrel, with 13 and 113 on the left and right grip scales, respectively. That makes this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out over the years! It is still fully functional, with no mechanical deficiencies to not.
Cosmetically, the revolver is in great shape. It still has almost all of the original nickel plating, and the markings are all strong. The bluing on the trigger and hammer are also well retained as well. The grip scales also look great, with the only issue being that the right scale is missing a substantial chunk, split off by the retaining pin. We checked the bore, and it looks to be smooth, and is in relatively good condition.
A very nice Forehand & Wadsworth .22 Baby Derringer, ready to display!
