Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice U.S. made flintlock pistol, with a design that is very much in the French style of the period. The barrel is unmarked, and may be a French import, as it has the classic "two stage" half-octagonal construction. The walnut stock has a lot of curl in the forestock area, and is the typical French style, with a flat bottom grip. It has an engraved trade lock marked:
C. BIRD & CO
PHILADA
WARRANTED
From research we can see that C. Bird & Co. of Philadelphia, PA operated about 1812-1820. They were lock makers, producing engraved locks that have been found on on Kentucky rifles and pistols. There is also a listing for C. Bird operating from 1790-1816, who probably changed the name when incorporating.
The pistol measures 15 1/2" overall with a .63 Caliber 10" barrel. It has all iron mounts in the French style, including a butt plate, trigger guard and two ramrod pipes. The lock screws are retained by small brass escutcheons. The wooden ramrod looks to possibly be replacement.
Condition is good, with the expected peppering from age and exposure to powder. The lock functions, but requires a tumbler adjustment, as it does not currently hold at half cock.
A very nice early American flintlock pistol, ready to add to your collection!
