  • Original Item. Only One Available. . As seen in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Similar helmets were officially designated; Helmet, Flying, Protective, Type P-1A, United States Air Force. We actually aren’t sure which model P Series helmet this is, but it certainly conforms to many of the aspects. The back of the helmet retains a tag denoting it as Model ND10, but we couldn’t find information on this.

This example retains the yellow and blue ELITE SOUND sticker on the front which is found on most of these. This example is fitted with a “Bubble Shield” face shield which has an integrated HAL-250 transceiver for communication. However the helmet’s interiors are now missing and the transceiver likely no longer works. The helmet retains the two headphone pieces and the cord they connect to but they are now loose as the headphone padding and the helmet liner is entirely gone. There is also an antenna coming out of the transceiver, a detail showing its age.

The P-1 was the first type of hard helmet mass produced for standard issue to the United States Air Force jet crewmen to provide buffeting and crash protection. The original P-1 was introduced in March 1948.

The helmet is in rough condition overall but will make for a good display.

    Ready for display.
