Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Original Federal Issue .45/70 Cartridge Box in excellent condition of circa 1870s vintage. This box is a nice example of an early manufactured “universal” style of carbine box that became standard. It came with a removable wood block that could be changed to fit a variety of different cartridges. The box has the typical early war style of attaching the latch tab by the means of a row of stitching, and is fitted with horizontal belt loops with one unfortunately broken.
This box has a large, and incredibly clear, makers mark which reads:
WATERVLIET
ARSENAL
This is a nice example of an Indian Wars Cartridge Box that has retained great color and finish. The interior wood block is bored out for twenty carbine cartridges. The cover shows some minute crazing from flexing and the reverse some handling marks. There is some flaking to the outer finish of the leather. The securing strap is unfortunately broken. The front of the flap is embossed with R.I.M. for Rhode Island Militia issue.
Overall, an excellent example of a Federal Issue Cartridge Box, perfect for the Indian Wars Collector!
