Original Item. One of a Kind. Well, we think that it is very, very doubtful that this REALLY belonged to a Wells Fargo Agent, however we think this was "enhanced" to look as if it did. No doubt to secure a sale to a U.S. Native American.
This double barrel 12 gauge hammer shotgun dates from the 1870's and is marked W. RICHARDS on both of the locks, possibly for the British Maker "WESTLEY RICHARDS". It is an early cartridge gun and has an under the hammer side swinging lever to break the gun for loading. It bears the initials JH on the left hand butt stock, printed out in thirty brass tacks alongside an angel-like decoration with a diamond like stone for its head.
The right hand butt stock bears a nailed on badge showing a STAR with a Stage Coach to the center and WELLS FARGO AGENT above and below the Coach. It also has a short bit of leather strapping nails to the butt to create two 12 gauge cartridge loops. The wrist of the weapon is covered in an old section of dried rawhide in typical Native American fashion.
Offered just as we found it, uncleaned clearly from many years of "back building" storage. Barrels just 20 1/2" in length, with an overall length of 36 1/2". Amazingly, both locks still function correctly, however one of the firing pin extensions is missing. Also there is quite a bit of slop and wear in the barrel hing connection and under lever.
Great for over the fireplace and yarns of the old West!
