Original Item: Only One Available. With no other external markings other than DEFENDER stamped into the top cylinder strap, this 5 shot cartridge pocket rimfire revolver was marketed by the Colt Dealers of the day as a clone of the PONY COLT. Colt had introduced the New Line series of pocket rimfire revolvers in 1873-4, and each different caliber of the range was nicknamed as follows: The .22 (THE LITTLE COLT), the .30 (THE PONY COLT) the .32 (THE LADIES COLT), the .38 (THE PET COLT) and the .41 (THE BIG COLT). These were copied far and wide due to the demand and relatively simple construction. Circa 1884-1886, submerged by the competitors' cheaper imitations and refusing to introduce a lower quality among its own firearms, the Colt company dropped the line and ceased production.
A fascinating little revolver with a spur trigger, bird's head grip with wooden grip plates, and a 2 1/2" barrel in just .30 caliber. It is stamped under the grip plates with what looks to be serial number 318. Single action only. Condition is very nice, with a lovely gray patina. Revolver breaks down correctly, and seems to work well, though as with any revolver of this age, it can be finicky.
Clearly a great early Gambler's or self defense revolver. Fully cleaned and ready to display!
