Original Item. Only One Available. A fallout shelter is an enclosed space specially designated to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion. Many such shelters were constructed as civil defense measures during the Cold War.
This is an excellent unissued Fallout Shelter sign in its original shipping box, sent John E. Buchanan, a Coordinator at a Florida Civil Defense Headquarters, sent from the Department of the Army. The box has kept this luminescent sign in great near mint condition with the only issue being a bend at one corner.
The box shows very heavy wear and is really only included to give period context to this sign and why it is in such great shape. It makes for an exciting research project.
The sign itself measures 10 x 14” and is the classic sign, designed in 1961 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers director of administrative logistics support function Robert W. Blakeley. The back of the box even has an older tag showing it wa sent from Algray Products inc in Ohio to the Engineer District at the Jacksonville Corps of Engineers.
The sign is painted at the bottom DOD FS NO. 2 (NOT THE BE REPRODUCED OR USED WITHOUT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PERMISSION).
