Original Item: Only One Available. This is a service-worn original U.S. SPH-4 helicopter flight helmet manufactured by Gentex, retaining its tinted single visor, internal suspension and energy-absorbing liner, earphones, and early-style removable single-snap chinstrap. The boom microphone is completely missing. The manufacturer's label is heavily worn and no longer preserves enough information to determine the helmet's exact contract or production date.

There is a partial original label that is almost void of data, but we could make out that it was manufactured by Gentex, and the headphones are also marked as by Gentex. Gentex was one of the principal manufacturers associated with the SPH-4 program. The Australian War Memorial preserves a Gentex-manufactured SPH-4 dated June 1971, demonstrating that helmets by the company were in production during the Vietnam War period.

The visor takes some force to move but it moves as intended. The original snap chinstrap is retained, rare to see as it is easily lost since it is removable. Some of the styrofoam is heavily scuffed and worn, but the helmet has held up well overall besides missing the microphone.

One particularly interesting surviving feature is the removable chinstrap with a single snap fastener on each side. This is the original early SPH-4 retention configuration. Research into the development of the helmet indicates that the single-snap-per-side chinstrap was used from the SPH-4's introduction around 1969–1970 until 1978, when an improved double-snap or “V” retention strap was introduced. A further strengthened retention system followed around 1980.

The combination of the Gentex manufacturer's label, single tinted visor, surviving headset, early single-snap chinstrap, original energy-absorbing liner, and extensive service wear makes this a good representative example of the SPH-4 system that transformed U.S. Army helicopter aircrew head protection beginning in the Vietnam era. Although its precise contract date and service history are no longer recoverable from the worn label, its surviving early-pattern features place it firmly within the first major generation of the SPH-4 family.
