Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. At one time, the 59th Ordnance Brigade was the largest brigade in the U.S. Army. The 59th covered 95,000 square miles from the border of Denmark, south to Switzerland, west into the Netherlands and spread throughout western Germany with over 7,000 soldiers. The soldiers within the 59th came from a wide variety of different occupations. The vast majority of soldiers were artillery, ordnance and military police, however, several support occupations were included to fill out this well-rounded brigade. One word stands out when describing the 59th Ordnance Brigade.
This is a lovely wooden sign depicting an Ordnance Bomb and the hood portion of what looks like an M135 or M211 truck. Painted on above the truck is "510th Ordnance A.V.P."
Below the truck is a scroll with "The Home of the Orange Bumpers". In fact, the bumper of the truck is painted orange. Oddly enough, there is a registration number painted on the truck: USA 5110387".
We believe that the item does not date to before 1959 when the company was assigned to the Armed Forces Weapons Project. The 510th was activated in June 1959 at Sandia Base, New Mexico as a special weapons and missile general support company. Most likely, it dates after August 1962 when the 510th arrived in Germany and was assigned to the 512th U.S. Army Artillery Group.
A great piece of art ready for further research and display.
