Original U.S. Civl War 10th Illinois Infantry Regiment Personal Pocket Diary Collection of Henry Smith

Item Description

Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. Henry C. Smith was born September 4th, 1835 near Chester Illinois and married Virginia Smith on December 7th, 1865. He served in the Civil War as a member of the 10th Illinois Infantry Regiment, Company E.

The 10th Illinois Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army between July 29, 1861, and July 11, 1865, during the American Civil War. The 10th Illinois Infantry was mustered into state service at Dixon, Illinois, on April 21, 1861, and mustered into Federal service on May 24, 1861, for a three-year enlistment. The regiment saw service at the Battle of Island Number Ten, the Battle of Resaca, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign. The regiment was mustered out on July 4, 1865, and discharged at Chicago, Illinois, on July 11, 1865.

This is a set of pocket diaries that begins January 1st, 1863 and concludes June 20th, 1865. There are three pocket diaries for each year; 1863, 1864, 1865. The inside cover of the 1864 diary lists his name Henry C Smith on the inside cover page and on the opposite page it reads:

H. C. Smith
10th ILL Infty Residence
Chester, Illinois

The diaries are full of hand written entries which, while mostly legible are difficult to read. Many entries begin "In Camp" and mention "marching", "the weather", "the enemy" and more. There is so much research potential in these diaries but it will take time, dedication and careful reading. We even found what we believe is a photograph of him a printed copy of which is included.

An incredible Federal soldier personal journal collection from the American Civil War!
