Original U.S. Civl War 10 Bore Percussion Goose Punt Gun with British P1853 Lock dated 1858

Original Item. Only One Available. This is very impressive, and something we rarely see! The overall length is 70 inches and the barrel alone is 53 inches with an .80" smooth bore, which is approximately a 10 bore. The lock, which could be a working life replacement, is a British TOWER / 1858 stamped lock plate with CROWN over V.R. on the tail, possibly taken from a three band Enfield Rifle used in the Civil War.
This huge Goose Gun was almost certainly built in the United States, most likely before the Civil War, as the barrel does not bear British Proof marks and the fore end has TWO securing wedges something done in America but not in Britain at that time. The stock is a very pleasing well grained walnut checkered at the wrist. The fittings are all of brass, except for the stock nose cap, which is German Silver.
The gun comes complete with an all wood ramrod which has an iron chisel on the rear end which appears to be a custom alteration. Not only is this a very big weapon, sometimes used as a punt gun where it was lashed to a small boat or similar, and discharged over a massive flock of resting geese or ducks on a lake. These would then rouse, directly into the line of fire, killing multiple birds with just one very powerful shot. That's the way to keep the pots full all over the area.
