Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Genuine Civil War Officer's Slouch Hat with Original Insignia. Body of the hat fabricated of fine quality black wool felt. bound around the edge with 1/4" black silk binding. Original gold bullion and black silk hat cord with black netting over the top of the acorn finials. Retains the original large, heavy gold bullion infantry officer's hunting horn insignia on the front with separately affixed silver numeral 1. Very fine quality embroidery on black felt background. Original 2 3/4" sweat band fabricated of a smooth maroon finished oil cloth. Somewhat brittle with a few chips and has now become detached from the inside of the hat, although other than the small chips on the edge, intact and readily restored. Fine example of a Civil War US officer's slouch hat.

The 1st Infantry Regiment is a regiment of the United States Army that draws its lineage from a line of post American Revolutionary War units and is credited with thirty-nine campaign streamers. The 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry is assigned as support to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and to furnish the enlisted garrison for the academy and the Stewart Army Subpost. 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment is an infantry component serving with the 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis–McChord, Washington.


In 1861 at the outbreak of the American Civil War the 1st escaped from rebel forces in Texas and the regiment returned to the Mid-west and fought in the Mississippi area of operations. The regiment fought in one of the first battles of the Civil War at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, in August 1861. The 1st Infantry then campaigned with General Grant against Vicksburg in 1863. The end of the war found the regiment occupying New Orleans, Louisiana.
