Original Items: One of a Kind Set. Here we have a very nice U.S. Civil War surgeon's dissection kit, almost certainly also used in wartime to assist taking care of minor wounds encountered on the battlefield. Consisting of scalpels, hooks and probes, it has a compartment under the lid for additional tools, showing the maker as:
HORATIO G. KERN,
NO. 293 MARKET STREET,
PHILADELPHIA.
On either side of this written in ink is the name of the owner and a date:
John Windle
October 20th 1852
There are even some hooks for retracting and a needle and thread. The tools in the lower compartment look to have fine ivory handles, and some are also marked by the maker.
A very nice little set, no doubt missing a few components. Comes in a nice latching leather covered wood case lined in maroon velvet, measuring 6 7/8" x 2 3/4" x 1 1/8". Ready to research and display!
