  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original U.S. Civil War-era .58 caliber socket bayonet for the Springfield Model 1855-family rifled muskets, complete with an early two-rivet leather scabbard and attached belt frog. The bayonet retains its original U.S. marking, smooth functioning locking ring, full triangular blade, and an attractive age patina.

The Springfield Models 1855, 1861, and 1863 represented the principal .58 caliber rifled musket family used by U.S. forces during the Civil War. Their adoption reflected the transition from earlier smoothbore percussion muskets to rifled arms firing the Minié-type projectile, dramatically improving effective range and battlefield accuracy.

This example is good with a fair patina, marked U.S.. The socket is not deformed at all, with a smooth moving lock. It still has the original U.S. marking on the blade ricasso, but there is moderate oxidation spotting across the blade.

The bayonet comes complete with a great early “2-Rivet” leather scabbard, with attached belt frog. The scabbard is very rough overall and the belt loop is carved with an X and the initials JT. There is a pretty bad bend halfway through but the brass drag is retained.

The combination of the U.S.-marked .58 caliber socket bayonet, straight and functional locking ring, full triangular blade, early two-rivet leather scabbard, and carved JT initials makes this a strong representative Civil War-era set. The blade oxidation and heavily worn scabbard are the principal condition issues, while the complete early configuration and surviving ownership marks remain its most interesting historical features.

    Socket Length: 3"
