Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a Smith & Wesson .32-caliber rimfire Model 2, with a 6 inch barrel. The serial number is 4015 dating the year of production to be approximately 1862, quite early in the war. The rosewood grips are original and have a matching serial number on one, and still a good amount of the original varnish. Wonderful finish to the metal work, still showing the original case hardened blue in many places, with clean crisp action, nice bore and nicely marked on top of the barrel:
The Patent information can still be seen clearly on the revolver cylinder, showing the 1855, 1859, and 1860 dates. Also, assembly number 90 can be seen on parts of the revolver, such as the grip frame and cylinder side of the barrel. The action works well, with correct alignment and cylinder advance. The bore is very good, with a bright finish, clear lands and grooves, and just a few spots of oxidation.
The revolver is housed in an original Civil War Era top-flap leather holster, which unfortunately has not fared as well as the gun, though that may explain the excellent condition of the firearm. The leather is missing a good deal of the finish, and is in a somewhat delicate condition, but definitely looks all of its 150+ years of age.
Revolvers with serial numbers under 35,731 are considered to be civil war guns since they were manufactured before May 1st, 1865. All are 32-caliber rimfire with a six shot non-fluted cylinder. All were manufactured with rosewood grips and blue or nickel-plated finishes. The barrels are marked on top with the manufacturer and patent dates are stamped on the cylinder. Most were made with 6 of 5 inch barrels, with 4 available as a special order.
According to published sources, 77,155 Model 2 Army revolvers were made. To date, the serial numbers on observed specimens have not substantiated this figure, 76,642 being the highest number noted. Unfortunately, the Smith & Wesson factory records for this period are incomplete and do not give a comprehensive picture of production.
This is the best example of a S&W Model 2 that we have ever had, complete with an original holster, ready to add to your civil war collection!
