Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original U.S. Civil War era Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army revolver chambered for .32 Rimfire, fitted with its full length 6" barrel and bearing matching serial number 26664. It remains in very good honest used condition with surviving original blue finish, varnished rosewood grips, intact barrel and cylinder markings, strong mechanical function, and a very good bore.
This is an antique black powder firearm manufactured before 1899. Under federal law, it may generally be owned within the United States without a special license or permit and does not require transfer through a Federal Firearms Licensee. However, state and local laws may vary. This firearm is sold solely as a historical collector’s item and has not been test fired or inspected for firing safety by a professional gunsmith. Any mechanical or bore observations provided below describe only its present condition and should not be interpreted as confirmation that the firearm is safe to load or fire. The purchaser is solely responsible for complying with all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
The Smith & Wesson Model 2 Army entered production in 1861 and became a widely carried metallic cartridge sidearm during the Civil War period. Chambered for the .32 Rimfire cartridge and using a six shot nonfluted cylinder, it was offered with several barrel lengths, including the 6" configuration seen here. With three pins on the top of the frame and a large serial number, some consider this to be a Model 2, type 4.
The revolver is serial numbered:
26664
which places it securely within Civil War era production. Production had started in 1861, and examples with serial number 35731 and lower were produced before May 1st, 1865, putting this about two thirds of the way through wartime production, probably made in late 1863 or early 1864. Because surviving factory records from this period are incomplete, that date should be treated as approximate rather than exact.
The bottom of the grip frame is clearly stamped:
26664
The same serial number is also present inside the right grip scale.
In addition, the assembly marking:
O
appears on the grip frame, barrel, and front of the cylinder. These matching markings support the conclusion that the major marked components have remained together.
The top of the barrel rib is clearly marked:
SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS
The cylinder retains its complete patent roll stamp:
PATENTED APRIL 3. 1855. JULY 5.1859 & DEC 18 1860.
The revolver was originally finished in blue with varnished rosewood grips. A portion of the original blue remains on both sides of the frame and along the barrel rib, while the cylinder and much of the balance of the barrel have worn to a pleasing aged patina. The wear is concentrated on exposed and heavily handled surfaces, with no major alterations or structural damage described. The surviving finish in protected areas gives the revolver a particularly attractive honest used appearance.
The rosewood grip panels remain in very good condition and retain nearly all of their original glossy factory varnish. There is wear around the bottoms from handling and carry, but no major cracks, chips, or repairs are described.
When operated by hand, the revolver cycles crisply with a strong mainspring, accurate cylinder indexing, and solid cylinder lockup. These observations describe only its current mechanical condition and were not made during live fire. The bore is in very good condition, remaining partly bright with strong lands and grooves. There is evidence of old fouling and oxidation that has since been cleaned away, together with wear consistent with substantial period use. Powder staining and burn marks are visible on the cylinder and barrel face, further indicating that the revolver saw significant firing use during its service life.
With its Civil War era serial number 26664, full length 6" barrel, matching numbered right grip, repeated assembly mark O, clear Smith & Wesson barrel address, complete cylinder patent legend, surviving original blue finish, varnished rosewood grips, strong mechanical function, and very good bore, this is a particularly appealing Model 2 Army revolver. The finish wear, cleaned bore oxidation, powder staining, and general service use are all fully disclosed. It would display especially well in a U.S. Civil War sidearm, early Smith & Wesson cartridge revolver, .32 Rimfire, or advanced 19th century American firearms collection.
