  • Original Item: Only One Set Available. This is a set of five original Civil War .31cal percussion cartridges, still in their original packaging. It has not been opened all the way, but the corners and seams have torn, so that some of the powder has escaped. With 5 cartridges, this would fully load the cylinders of many .31cal percussion revolvers of the time made by Colt, Whitney, Manhattan, and others. They followed the Colt Model 1849 in having 5 shot cylinders.

The "cartridges" inside are wrapped in paper and allow the powder and bullet to be placed as a single unit inside the cylinder chamber. This was significantly faster than having to pour powder from a measuring flask. These would eventually evolve into the brass cartridges used today.

The original labeling on the package is still clear:

    5 Combustible Envelope
    CARTRIDGES
    Made of Hazard's Powder,
    FOR EITHER COLT'S OR WHITNEY'S
    Revolving Pocket Pistols.
    31/100 inch Calibre
    Warranted Superior Quality

A fantastic display item, ready to go along with your Civil War .31cal Percussion Pistol!
