Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original U.S. Civil War Rogers & Spencer Army Model .44 caliber percussion revolver manufactured in Utica, New York. Serial numbered 1906 throughout, it retains matching numbered metal components, a clear RPB U.S. martial inspection cartouche, a notably crisp action, and an excellent bright bore with strong rifling.

This is an antique black powder firearm manufactured before 1899. It is sold as a historical collector’s item and has not been test fired or evaluated by a professional gunsmith. The mechanical and bore observations below describe only its present condition and do not establish that it is safe to load or fire. The purchaser is responsible for complying with all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Rogers & Spencer manufactured approximately 5,800 Army Model revolvers, including 5,000 produced under a United States government contract near the end of the Civil War. The revolvers were delivered late in the conflict, and many are believed to have arrived too late for significant wartime issue. No individual military service history accompanies this example.

The revolver is a single action percussion design chambered in .44 caliber, with a six shot cylinder and 7 1/2" octagonal barrel. Its solid frame construction reflects the general development of American military percussion revolvers during the period and bears similarities to contemporary Whitney and Remington designs.

The number is present on the left side of the frame, bottom of the grip frame, underside of the barrel, cylinder, loading lever, and cylinder arbor pin. The wooden grip panels were removed for inspection, and no serial numbers were observed on the undersides

This cartouche is associated with U.S. Army inspector Captain R. P. Barry, who inspected martial revolvers during the Civil War period, including examples produced by Remington, Starr, and Rogers & Spencer. Its strong visibility adds considerable appeal to this government inspected example.

The revolver has an attractive, lightly aged appearance. Most of the original blued finish has worn to a smooth gray patina, with only scattered areas of previously cleaned peppering. The cylinder retains a substantially greater amount of original blue, with expected finish wear on the front and rear faces and along the circumference from operation of the cylinder stop.

The walnut grips remain in very good overall condition. They show chipping along the lower edges but no visible cracks or major repairs.

The revolver appears complete, and the single action mechanism is notably crisp and solid. The hammer cocks correctly, the cylinder indexes as intended, and lockup is very good, with only slight movement when the revolver is at full cock. The mainspring remains strong.

The cylinder arbor pin retaining system functions easily, allowing the revolver to be taken down into its principal components. These observations describe the present mechanical operation only and are not a guarantee of future function or safety.

The bore is in excellent condition for a Civil War era black powder revolver. It is bright, with crisp lands and grooves. Only very minor evidence of past fouling and oxidation is visible, and these areas appear to have been cleaned.

The percussion nipples, or cones, are in very good overall condition and show little wear, with no obvious damage from repeated dry firing. Only several could be fully inspected because grease remains inside some of the chambers.

The Rogers & Spencer Army Model is recognized as one of the final U.S. martial percussion revolvers contracted during the Civil War. Although its late delivery limited its opportunity for wartime use, its robust solid frame construction, relatively limited production, and government inspected configuration have made it particularly desirable among collectors of American martial handguns.

With its fully matching serial numbered metal components, clear RPB martial cartouche, retained cylinder blue, crisp action, complete loading assembly, and exceptional bore, this is a particularly attractive Rogers & Spencer Army Model revolver. The finish loss, cleaned peppering, slight cylinder movement, minor grip chipping, and traces of past bore fouling are fully disclosed. It would be an excellent addition to a U.S. Civil War arms, martial percussion revolver, Rogers & Spencer, or advanced American handgun collection.
