Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Model 1860 Boarding Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cuillère a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood grip, which has lost almost all of the leather and string covering over the years. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves.
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is almost completely faded, but still legible -

On the other side it is marked-

This indicates inspection by U.S. Sword Inspector Daniel Reynolds, who was stationed at the Ames factory. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 16M / 294. The guard has a lovely "mustard" patina on the brass, and does not have any of the original tin plating still present. It has some denting and bending in the bowl as well, and the hilt is overall a bit loos on the end of the blade.
The 26 inch blade is in very good condition, looking to have been carefully cleaned and polished over the years. It has had the edge sharpened in the past, and there are no major dents or dings that we can see. Really a nice looking blade.
The cutlass comes with a very nice recent replica scabbard and frog, which are actually somewhat accurate, with the scabbard secured in the back with copper rivets. It does however have a small copper drag fitting, which is not correct, but it definitely helps with the displayability.
Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year. Ready to display!
