Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Model 1860 Boarding Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood grip with almost all of the original leather present. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves.
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is almost completely faded, but still legible -

On the other side it is marked-
U.S.N.
D.R.
1862
This indicates inspection by U.S. Sword Inspector Daniel Reynolds, who was stationed at the Ames factory. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 22M / 351. The guard of this example, and others we have seen, was coated with lacquer to improve the appearance and protect it, with some of this getting on the blade ricasso.
The 26 inch blade is in fair condition, with oxidation staining on the entirety. The edge is a bit rough due to some light denting. Brass bowl hand guard showing signs of its very rare ORIGINAL tin plating, surrounding the grooved wooden grip. The guard has a lovely mustard patina.
Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year. Ready to display!
