Original U.S. Civil War Rare Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames with Damaged Leather Scabbard - Dated 1862
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood with leather wrapped sword grip, which has been coated with black lacquer. It comes with an original damaged leather scabbard, which is now in two pieces.
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is partly faded, but still legible -

There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 2 3 M / 779. The guard of this example, and others we have seen, was coated with gold lacquer to improve the appearance and protect it, with some of this getting on the blade ricasso.
The blade is in really nice shape, with a mostly bright finish, and no edge nicks. It has not been sharpened, though it definitely has been cleaned repeatedly, possibly by machine, which has left a striated texture on a lot of the surface. There is just a bit of past pitting near the tip. The leather blade buffer is still present, and in very good condition.
The damaged leather scabbard definitely shows all of its possibly 150 + years of age. The bottom of the scabbard has broken off, and it is torn through completely about 7 inches below the throat. There is a belt loop riveted to the scabbard, but it is broken, and the one of the rivets is pulling out.
Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready to display!
