Original U.S. Civil War Rare Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames Mfg. Co. with Scarce Wire-Wrapped Grip - Dated 1862

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rough but fair example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1861-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a leather-wrapped wooden sword grip. It features all brass mounts and a wire-wrapped leather grip, indicative of issue to an officer. These almost never retain their wire, so this is a scarce offering.
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is extremely faded and only visible from a certain angle:

The blade is in good overall shape, however it has some oxidation spotting which has been cleaned in spots. There aren’t very many chips in the edge. This example does not have a serial number, which makes sense for an officer’s example. The blade buffer is gone.
The handle is in good shape with looseness in some strands of wire, with one strand appearing missing, but it has held up tremendously well overall. The brass basket has some heavy oxidation on the interior as shown, but the exterior isn’t as bad. The interior oxidation could be cleaned with some work.
Offered in fair but gorgeous condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready for further research and display!
