Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rough but fair modified example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1861-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a heavily cracked leather-wrapped wooden sword grip. Many of these were never bound in brass wire even though there are grooves. This example may have had wire at one point, but we cannot say for sure. The basket guard on this example appears to have been cut down during the period to be used with more versatility.
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is extremely faded and only visible from a certain angle:
MADE BY
AMES MFG
CHICOPEE
MASS
One the other side it is well marked with:
1862
D.R.
U.S.N.
The blade is in fair shape, however it has very heavy pitting and oxidation especially under the scabbard, the removal of which shows that the tip of the blade is worn down. The area without scabbard is in much better shape. The area under the scabbard has many small chips in the edge. The very tip of the cutlass is also worn down from heavy oxidation. The serial number 20M/469 is stamped under the crossguard, although it is very faint and difficult to make out.
The handle is in fair condition with very heavy cracking in the wood, although there is more retained leather than you normally see in certain spots.
The small 12 ⅝” long fragment of the original scabbard is in rough condition with heavy loss of material and splitting along the seam, but the larger top rivet is still somehow retained, along with 19 of the smaller rivets. The scabbards for the M1860 Naval Cutlass were riveted as opposed to stitched due to the quicker deterioration of stitching when exposed to saltwater.
Offered in fair but interesting condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready for further research and display!
