  • Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, a wood with cord and leather wrapped sword grip, and a nice brass-fitted leather scabbard. The leather is in very good shape, looking to have had a protective coating applied in the past, and the leather blade buffer is present too. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is partly faded, but still legible -

    MADE BY
    AMES MFG
    CHICOPEE
    MASS

One the other side it is marked-

    U.S.N.
    D.R.
    1862

The blade is in very good condition, showing a mostly bright finish, though there are the expected stains from use at sea. It has not had any major sharpening done in some time, and there are even verdigris stains on the blade from the scabbard. There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 1 8 M / 7 6. The guard as a whole shows a bit of recent cleaning, and like most none of the original zinc plating is still present.

The included leather scabbard is in very nice condition, with the expected wear from service and age. It has the correct row of brass rivets down the left side of the scabbard, though the last few are missing, and the very tip looks to have been repaired with some type of paint or glue. It still has most of the original black finish, though it is cracking in places, and the brass fittings are oxidized. It is worn through near the intact brass frog button on the reverse side. The scabbards usually rotted away and are very seldom seen.

Offered in lovely nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially with the original scabbard! Ready to display!
