Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Model 1860 Boarding Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood with leather wrapped sword grip, which has been coated with black lacquer, most of which is present. These were NEVER bound in brass wire and the brass wire. It comes with a complete and original scabbard, which are more rare than the cutlass!

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is unmarked. Normally there would be manufacturer and inspector markings, but those have either worn away or were never marked. The guard of this example, and others we have seen, was coated with gold lacquer to improve the appearance and protect it, with some of this getting on the blade ricasso.

The 26 inch blade is in very good condition, with a bright finish with just a bit of oxidation staining in places. The edge is a bit rough due to some light denting. Brass bowl hand guard showing signs of it's very rare ORIGINAL tin plating, surrounding the grooved wooden grip. The guard has a lovely mustard patina.

This classic cutlass comes complete with its original early style heavy leather scabbard stitched at the rear covering its full length. There never were bottom or throat mounts to these scabbards. Only a brass stud mounted in the leather about 3" down from the top of the scabbard which was intended for use with a large leather belt frog also of leather. This scabbard does have the brass drag on the bottom and signs that there was a brass throat. So either this was a post war addition or just a preferred scabbard used by the sailor, we are unsure, but they pair very well together and have been for quite some time.

Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially with scabbards! Ready to display!
