Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rare bird! This is a very nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Model 1860 Boarding Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a wood groop with almost all of the original leather missing. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves. It comes with a mostly completely original scabbard, which is more rare than the cutlass!
The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is almost completely faded, but still legible -

The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 17M / 368. The guard of this example, and others we have seen, was coated with lacquer to improve the appearance and protect it, with some of this getting on the blade ricasso.
The 26 inch blade is in very good condition, with a bright finish with just a bit of oxidation staining in places. The edge is a bit rough due to some light denting. Brass bowl hand guard showing signs of its very rare ORIGINAL tin plating, surrounding the grooved wooden grip. The guard has a lovely mustard patina.
This classic cutlass comes complete with its rare original early style heavy leather scabbard secured at rear by a series of brass/copper washer rivets covering its full length. There never were bottom or throat mounts to these scabbards. Only a brass stud mounted in the leather about 3" down from the top of the scabbard which was intended for use with a large leather belt frog also of leather.
Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially with scabbards! Ready to display!
