Original Item: Only One Available. This is perhaps one of the finest examples of a Confederate States Army (CSA) Issue Wooden Drum Canteen that we have seen available on the market in many years!
Recently uncovered from an old collection of Civil War artifacts we were fortunate enough to obtain. We are delighted to offer one of the finest examples of the classic Confederate Wooden Drum Canteen we have ever had!
This is one of the quintessential pieces of the Confederate Soldier’s Kit. The Confederates, pressed with a lack of resources and the industrial capabilities of the North, often had to resort to utilizing inferior or obsolete items as standard issue during the war years. Canteens were of no exception. This is the classic southern wooden drum canteen made of Cherry Wood with reinforced iron bands and sling loops. Remarkably, the original spout is still intact, which is a treat, as most examples of this canteen on the market today (and even in some national museums) are missing there original wooden spout!
It measures almost 7 1/2" in diameter and is 2 3/8" wide. The circumference of the body is comprised of 10 tight fitting staves held firmly to the sides by two riveted iron bands. The staves show slight shrinkage, which naturally occurs when he the canteens are dry from not holding water (even during the war, Confederate troops kept their canteens filled at all times to prevent this from happening!). Regardless, the canteen is incredibly solid.
All three iron sling guides are still present. The bands and sling guides have a matching plum oxidized patina. The finish of the canteen still retains a reddish cherry wood appearance with a pleasing amount of rested natural patina which has accumulated over the last 150 years.
