  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. We’ve had a great variety of experimental items in the past, but they’re mostly from the World War I period and later. This is a truly unique piece of Civil War field gear, an M1861 Cartridge box which has been heavily altered for the carrying of metallic ammunition. The “tins” have been shortened and are now one single long tin, with a second tin being inserted underneath the first, which leans outwards when pulled. The bottom set is held in place by two straps on the side which connect to two additional brass knobs on the sides of the box.

The back of the cartridge box has a period note pasted to it reading:

    No. 2
    Cartridge Box altered
    For metallic ammunition.

This was most certainly an alteration of the period, and may have been intended for cavalry units equipped with the Burnside carbine, which was the first United States issued small arms weapon that utilized metallic cartridges.

The cartridge box is in good shape overall, with all three closure straps still intact although rather cracked. The two roller buckles are still intact as well. This is a phenomenal piece of experimental Civil War equipment, and the note on the back is the best kind of provenance to have for an item like this. You won’t find another like it! Comes ready for further research and display.
