Original Item. Only One Available. The regulations of 1859 for the U.S. Marine Corps distinguished between headgear for “dress” and for “fatigue” (i.e. every day and field use.) The specified insignia for officers’ fatigue caps was gold bullion embroidered hunting horns with a silver Old English “M” in the loop on a crimson ground.
This is an extremely scarce example of a Civil War Marine Corps Officers cap insignia. This insignia is near perfect besides missing the M, which is the most easily replaceable part of the badge. The badge measures 2 ½" x 1 ⅞”. The badge has a great red felt border with the hunting horns being made from bullion with small gold roundels at the mouth. This is one of the most well-preserved officer’s badge we have seen.
